Western Europe Journal

We started our Western Europe  journey with Austria. To see journals from our other Western Europe stops, just click the links at the top of the page.

(Keith) Vienna is a beautiful city . . . if only we had brought more money.  As we return to the "western world" we have all the niceties that I've forgotten, like the $6 cup of espresso shown in the picture; in Prague that would have gotten us BOTH lunch and a large beer.

Oh well, other than the costs, Vienna is a great place with lots of artists and musicians.  As you stroll through the streets, classical musicians entertain and the architecture inspires, just don't forget your Visa card.

(Lea) Recently someone who is planning a Round The World trip with her husband emailed me a question.  She asked if I managed to exercise on the trip and how.  I worried before we began traveling that I would not be able to stay in shape.  I knew that the majority of places we would stay at would not have a fitness center, and that jogging around many of the cities would be difficult because a) I had no room to pack jogging shoes and b) jogging in places like Kathmandu would be no fun whatsoever. But I still managed to find ways to stay fit.

The big thing is that Keith and I do not sit still.  We are constantly sight seeing and exploring.  And we rarely use local transport like buses or subways - we walk.  We normally walk hours and hours everyday because it is fun just to see the everyday life of the cities.  Once we were caught in the rain in Sydney with 2 miles to our hotel - we bought umbrellas and still walked!  In addition to walking I made up a 30 minute exercise routine that I do every morning in the hotel rooms.  Sometimes it is difficult as the rooms can be small, but I manage.  It includes lots of  exercises from my Navy workouts - sit ups, pushups, jumping jacks and all that good stuff.  So in the end, I feel pretty fit.  And I enjoy the great food and wine and beer we encounter without too much guilt!
