The Udaipur City Palace is the largest palace complex in
Rajasthan. Construction began in 1600 and it was occupied by the maharajas
(kings) until the 1950s.
90 Km from Udaipur is Ranakpur where one of the 5 holiest Jain temples is
located. This temple was built in 1439. Fundamental to Jain beliefs is ahimsa,
non-violence, in thought and deed.
Within
Ranakpur's Jain temple, there are 29 halls supported by 1444 marble
pillars. Each pillar is ornately carved and no two are alike.
The
Lake Palace Hotel is located on an island in the middle of Udaipur's Lake
Pichola. This used to be the summer home of the maharaja. Today it is a five
star luxury hotel.
