Santorini Journal
(Lea and Keith) We could get used to life on Santorini! We
arrived with my parents and all of us were captivated by the island's rugged
beauty. The eastern side is lined with sloping red rock cliffs overlooking the
Aegean sea. What was probably the biggest volcanic eruption in the world
occurred in Santorini around 16th century BC. In fact, some believe that
Santorini was a part of the mythical lost continent of Atlantis. The eruption
created a submerged caldera (crater) with high cliffs. Our villas were built
into the cliffs and on our porches we enjoyed a view of the green sea which
fills the caldera, outlying islands (one with an active volcano) and villages
lining the cliffs. The villages are comprised of bright white buildings with
arched doorways, rounded roofs, and sea blue shutters and doors.
A typical day for us consisted of waking up as the sun
beamed into our villa. After exercising we would walk down to the poolside (also
built into the cliffs) and select from a buffet breakfast, including wonderful
Greek feta cheese and olives. The four of us would then eat on our porches and
enjoy the morning breezes and view. After spending time reading we would venture
up the stone outdoor stairs to the top of the cliff. From there we would either
journey to nearby villages and explore their stone narrow alleyways on foot or
we would drive around the island to see an ancient city's ruins (16th century
BC), wineries, or the beaches . After exploring back down to our
porch for lunch and then the pool to read. By early evening we were back on the
porch drinking Santorini wine, sometimes talking, sometimes playing cards and
always watching the sunset. Then, up the stairs again for dinner in a local
taverna. After that, back down to, you guessed it, the porch, where we would
light candles and talk. We all agree it was a wonderful week on a spectacular
island!
