Nepal Food

Nepal impressions - o.k. after we came from south east Asia (especially Thailand), the food in Nepal had a tough act to follow.  Though not (in our opinion) as tasty as its predecessors, Nepalese food had some interesting tastes that hopefully I can recreate once back in a kitchen.

An interesting thing about the food in Pokhara and our treks, is that they create quite a diversity of dishes.  The tea houses along the Annapura and Jomsom trails are simple structures.  Most contain fire stoves with very few burners; also, there is usually only one or two cooks in the kitchen.  Somehow these cooks have learned to prepare many dishes, e.g. pasta, pizza, Chinese, and of course Nepalese on these primitive stoves.  The problem comes when the lodge is full and everyone orders something different . . . often food arrives at odd times and the cooking can take along time.  We found it much easier to order the same thing to make preparations easy on the kitchen.

Momo - the momo is a mixture of vegetables, meat (chicken . . . many of the Nepalese are Hindus), and peppers wrapped in a pasta and steamed.  Each momo is about two bites and goes great with a beer and a green chili sauce.  This is very basic food, but if the ingredients are fresh the momo is a terrific appetizer.
