Nafplio Journal
(Lea
and Keith) Lea's
parents arrived in Greece a week after we did; Lea and I didn't want to stay in
Athens the entire time, so we decided to get out of the city for a couple of days
and see a small Greek village. I remember a friend of mine recommending
visiting the town Nafplio and that it is an easy and memorable trip from Athens. She was right.
Nafplio lies on the Peloponnese and is an easy 3 hour bus ride
from Athens. The old Venetian town sits at the base of the Palamidi
Fortress on the Aegean Sea. There is a great seaside walkway that connects
the old quarter of Nafplio with a beach; along this walkway you can climb onto
the rocks and have
your own private beach on the clear, green Aegean.
The town itself has cafe and taverna lined, winding streets; we
spent several nights (including my birthday) sipping Greek wine and eating in
the local establishments. Speaking of my birthday, on this glorious day (obviously
written by Keith) we decided to try some Ouzo. Ouzo is a Greek
aperitif that is distilled from grape stems; one sip was all we needed to
shun this Greek delicacy forever.
Nafplio
is a great place to experience Greek life as it is suppose to be experienced -
slow. Its very nice and refreshing to be in a town that is full of culture
and atmosphere, yet not encumbered with relentless traffic and hordes of
tourists.
