Sultan Ahmet Camii - The Blue Mosque

World famous Turkish tiles

Koran verse within the Blue Mosque.  Islam prohibits the depicture of images (people and animals) in art; instead artists use geometric shapes and beautiful calligraphy.

Topkapi Saryi (or the palace of the sultans).  The palace was used to house the rulers of the Ottoman Empire until the 19th century.  The picture shows the sultan's reception area where he (and his harem) received guests and were entertained.

A fisherman with a fresh catch of mussels along the Bosphorus.  The Bosphorus separates Asia from Europe; Istanbul straddles the strait and lies both in Asia and Europe.
