Taj Mahal
In 1631 Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan directed the building of the
Taj as a mausoleum for his favorite wife.
The Taj Mahal, as seen from the Agra Fort during a windstorm.
To
the west of the Taj Mahal is a mosque; to the east is an exact copy of this
mosque built for symmetry. The eastern building cannot be used as a mosque
because it faces the wrong direction.
The
abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri was the capital during Mughal Emperor Akbar's
reign. In 1565, he directed the city's construction of Hindu and Muslim influenced buildings.
The picture shows the main gate, Gate of Victory, constructed to
commemorate Akbar's victory in Gujarat.
The
Red Fort in Delhi dates from the peak of Mughal power in India. Emperor Shah Jahan
ordered the construction in 1638.
