Greece Photos
We started our Greece journey in Athens. To see photos from
our other Greece stops, just click the links at the top of the page.
Throughout
modern Athens we discovered buildings from centuries ago. In the middle of a
popular shopping district stands a 4th century Byzantine church. People still
worship there today.
Overlooking
Athens is the Acropolis, the most important ancient monument in the western
world. Shown is the Parthenon; it is dedicated to Athena and construction was
completed in 4th century BC.
The
Erechtheion temple housed the cults of Athena, Poseidon and Erichthonius, the
mythical king of Athens. The female statues are the Caryatids, who take the
place of columns to support the structure.
The
gods seemed nearby as we looked past the Ionic columns into the sky.
