Greece Food
Greece impressions - after eating numerous varieties of the
chickpea in Egypt; Greece's fresh tomatoes, olives, feta, and cucumbers were a
welcome treat. By the way, I think I've eaten more olives (and olive
oil) in these four weeks than I've eaten in my entire life.
Olive pate - looks pretty simple . . . black olives smashed into
a paste. It tastes great on fresh bread.
Gyro (lamb or chicken) - Probably the most recognized Greek
street food . . . the pita sandwich that gets its meat from the huge, vertical
slab of meat (I hope it's meat?) in the window. I think this could be made
from sautéed chicken and garlic. The secret is lots of tzatziki (cucumber
and yogurt); my favorites were served stuffed with onions and tomatoes.
Stuffed vine leaves - at our favorite restaurant on Santorini,
Stu and I ordered these excellent stuffed vine leaves. These huge grape
leaves were stuffed with a strong cheese (maybe Blue cheese), rice, and
lamb. They were then baked and covered with another cheese.
Excellent . . . my favorite meal in Greece.
Moussaka - a casserole that is not bad; it has layers of
eggplant, zucchini, minced meat (lamb), and potatoes. It is topped with a
strong cheese before baking.
Baklava - filo pastry filled with honey and nuts . . . good
stuff though a little too sweet for my tastes.
All in all, I enjoyed the food in Greece; its really hard to NOT
like a fresh salad, bottle of wine, and a beautiful sunset.
