Germany Journal

(Keith)  Ah, nothing like a big pretzel and a beer.  Bavaria has them both in abundance, and we partook in them both in abundance.  Also, on my list of favorites is the bratwurst and sauerkraut, of course you again must accompany it with a cold beer.

What is not on my list of favorites is the Dachau concentration camp that lies on the outskirts of Munich.  I visited this awful place 8 years ago and left with a sick feeling that was really hard to shake.  We revisited (or I revisited, this was Lea's first) the camp and the same feelings return.  I find man's inhumanity towards his fellow human beings incomprehensible.

A particularly poignant memory of Dachau that has remained with me since my first visit is a photograph of the officers in charge of the camp.  They pose for the camera puffed-up and full of themselves, decorated with their medals, and dressed in their clean uniforms; above all of this decoration and posturing, you can see the pride in their eyes . . . truly evil people.

(Lea) In my last journal I wrote about my on the road fitness routine.  From this picture you can see why I need it!  Here I am in Hofbrauhaus beer hall enjoying a large pretzel with mustard and excellent German beer.  I had more than one of both of these as we toured Munich.

This beer hall is over 100 years old and was packed each day we visited.  Tons of locals decked out in traditional German outfits go there to enjoy a beer (a liter sized mug!) and  listen to some good "oom-pah" music.  While there we enjoyed the band and the many who danced to their upbeat music.  Everyone in the beer hall seems very happy.  We were!

Check out our Germany Photos.
