China Adoption Costs

We were surprised to find that the overall costs for China adoptions are not as high as we had about expected. And the government really helps families who are adopting. The most recent adoption tax law gives families up to a $10,000 tax credit—so families get $10,000 back if their income is less than $150,000.   Up to $190,000, families get a reduced credit. Additionally many companies, including Keith’s company AMS, give families money towards adoption expenses!  Below is a general estimate of costs. They are approximately the same for every family adopting from China. Minor differences occur based on agency, paperwork and travel costs.

Adoption Budget

Pre-China Paperwork: (includes ordering documents, notarization, sending)

$500-$1000

Home Study by State Agency $1000-$1500
Adoption Agency Fee $4000-$5000
INS Fees $560 (for a couple)
Chinese Orphanage Donation $3000
Travel to China $4000-$6000
Paperwork Fees in China: (Our Visas, Child Entrance Visa, Child Passport, Child Physical, Adoption Registration): $1000-$1400 $1000-$1400
Agency Post Placement Visits $500-$1000
Post Placement Paperwork: (U.S. Court costs, U.S. Birth Certificate, etc) $1000
TOTAL $15,560 to $20,460

(If you qualify for the full tax credit, your total costs ends up being $5,560 to $10,460. You cannot claim the credit until the adoption is final.)
