Cambridge & York Journal

As we walked the streets of Cambridge I longed to go back to college.
Specifically I wanted to attend any of the many universities in Cambridge
– Kings Cross, Trinity, Jesus, to name a few.
Cambridge’s downtown is made up of all the universities’ centuries
old Gothic buildings and cathedrals. We
spent our time walking by these stately buildings, past the crisp green lawns,
and along the canal where students were “punting” through the water. I felt I should have been carrying a play of
Shakespeare (rather than my Lonely Planet) and wearing a blazer and skirt
(rather than my jeans and hiking boots). At
night we attended a choral evensong at the Kings Cross chapel and enjoyed a
traditional evening service with amazing voices. Of course, that was not
our only evening entertainment. Both
Keith and I enjoyed another tradition – imbibing ale at a local pub.
Cambridge is filled with age old pubs like Kings Arms or (our favorite)
Sir Isaac Newton. Each night we
enjoyed a pint here and were always surrounded by students – seems like
students around the world enjoy the same evening entertainment.

The colleges of Cambridge certainly create an excellent atmosphere for
learning. The classic buildings surround meticulously manicured grounds
where one could spend hours reading and contemplating.
Late one afternoon, Lea and I retired to a Starbucks for a
coffee. As we were sitting and enjoying our beverages, I noticed a woman
in line with a Virginia Tech shirt. We were surrounded by many students
reading, and I leaned over to Lea to point out the Hokie. The guy next to
me chuckled and asked if we were from the states; he was from Virginia and had
attended the University of Virginia and was now pursuing his Master's Degree at
Trinity . . . small world.
