2009 Beijing Journal

Keith and Grace in front of the Forbidden City.
We made it! After 24 hours of travel and less than 2 hours of
sleep each we were excited to reach Beijing. Whew. Grace was terrific but it was
long--I don't even want to think of the ride back! When we got here, the cab
took us right to the Hyatt and it was a beautiful as we remembered. We walked
around, checked out its wonderful restaurants and Club Oasis, the island-like
pool and spa area. Grace was excited as her room had a panda bear and robe
waiting for her. Then we ate in the room and sacked out.
The next day, despite jet lag, we walked for hours and hours
exploring the area, We walked to the Forbidden City and explored the many
buildings where the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties lived. The day after
that we went to the Great Wall which has a history dating back to 200BC,,and it
was a favorite of Grace's. The following day we walked to
Tiananmen Square and from there we walked to the Temple of Heaven, a famous park
full of temples the emperors used in the Ming dynasty, which dates back to the
1400s.
In the afternoons we enjoyed the pool, drinks in the lounge and
trying out fantastic Chinese dinners! Grace is a big traveler like us--keeps up
on all the walking despite the jet lag and intense travel! She has used a little
of the Mandarin words she knows and impresses everyone with that. She is
drinking this all in! We are excited to get Hope in a few days!
